Canned Dog Food vs Dry Dog Food – There Is A Difference

Canned Dog Food vs Dry Dog Food

dry dog food vs canned,You may have heard or read news stories in the last few years about the best foods to feed your dog, whether to choose dry dog food or canned dog food, or something else.

Sorting out the hype from the facts can be difficult. Some proponents of raw foods will say that their choice is best, but with it are always the dangers of food contamination and a lack of nutritional balance.

Conversely, commercially prepared foods have fed pets and zoo animals for decades safely.  But within the world of prepared foods are a wide variety of types, quality, and prices.  In the end, what you should look for are foods that agree with your dog’s digestive system and are not wasteful.

To help you narrow down some of the choices, here are some things to look for on your next shopping trip for canned dog food vs dry dog food.

 Dry Dog Food –

First let’s look at dry dog food.  Dry dog food is convenient because it can be stored easily without refrigeration, and if you have a dog that likes to free feed, you can safely leave it out without bacteria forming as it would with wet food left in the “danger zone” between 40 and 140 degrees. Some key factors to look for include examining the top ingredients and the amount of fillers used in the food.

1 – A good dog food will have meat as its top ingredient, and will be low on grain-based fillers.

2 – Quality meats include wild game, turkey, chicken, lamb, beef, and fish. Your dog is descended from wolves, and it needs to have protein for its muscles.

3 – Additional ingredients can be quality vegetables and fruits like peas or sweet potatoes, plus whole grains like oats for fiber and balanced carbohydrates.

4 – Finding foods free of artificial preservatives and dyes is important, since neither one is processed by the dog’s body well and they can lead to allergies.

 Efficient ?

Do not be swayed by the thought that the most expensive natural dry dog food is guaranteed to be the best.  Your dog may find that the mix of ingredients upsets their stomach, so be willing to buy small bags of several different kinds of food and test them out.

This also gives you the chance to compare labels and look at the overall nutrition information. Many inexpensive dog foods have high fat fillers or useless fiber that just passes through. You can often feed less of a natural dry dog food than you would an inexpensive brand since it is more “efficient” food.

 Taste and Digestible –

canned dog food vs dry dog food,It may also take a couple of weeks to determine how your dog will react to his food and if he even likes the food.  Just because he gobbles up the first serving does not mean he will like it long term.

He might have just been hungry.  Look for how your dog reacts to the food – is he active or sluggish?  Does he have large amounts of “output” due to indigestible fillers in the food?  Is he hungry all the time or does the food you feed him satisfy his hunger?

You should also not go based on what you have fed pets in the past.  Just as you are not the same person as your parents, each dog is unique. Finding the right balance between cost and appeal will mean you have found the right food for your dog. Be sure you research the company and look for any recalls that have been issued due to salmonella or tainted ingredients.

 Canned Dog Food Comparison –

Now let’s look at canned dog food.  Within that type of food you will find a wide range of prices, even though the ingredients are often quite similar.

1 – Just like with dry dog food, however, cheaper canned foods will have grains and meat by-products (such as chicken feet) instead of higher quality meats.

2 – Look for canned food that is free of artificial preservatives and dyes, just as you would for dry food.

The label should say that the food provides balanced nutrition and that it meets the standards set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials if you plan to serve it as the main food.  Commercially produced foods that have these words on the labels will have balanced nutrition, so you can be confident in what you feed your pet.

Trying to cook your dog’s food yourself requires a lot of research to be sure you are giving them everything they need, making commercial canned dog food much easier to use.

As with dry food, if you notice your dog chewing on “hot spots” or licking excessively, or if it has digestive upsets, switch out the food until you find one that your dog likes and that is well-tolerated. Pets can have wheat and corn allergies just like humans do, so look for foods that are free of these products.

Vegetarian food for your dog should not be given.  He needs the proteins formed by amino acids that can only be found in meats.

canned dog food vs dry,One place canned food has an advantage over dry food is that it is sealed in a steel can, which gives it a much longer shelf life when unopened and the fats in the product will not turn rancid as fast as a bagged food will, but once it is opened, it needs to be used quickly and kept refrigerated.

It’s also much easier for older dogs that might have sensitive teeth to chew wet food.

Many pet parents find that a combination of dry and wet food is best for their dogs.  They get the teeth-cleaning capability of the dry food, with the moisture and flavor of the wet food.  The combination also helps ensure proper balance in the diet, and reduces the chance of constipation.

Meal for meal, feeding wet food exclusively can be more costly than a dry food, but if it is used as a supplement to a dry food meal, it provides an affordable balance.

We hope that you have a better idea of what to look for in a dog food.  Experiment, try different combinations, and see what your pet likes best.
