Nice Fitting Backpack

I am going to talk a bit about the best dog backpacks for your needs and choosing the best dog backpack for your buddy. Now I realize that most of you will want to take your dog on hikes and not choose a specific breed just for hiking but maybe I can give you a few tips on hiking with your pet.

A few things to consider about backpacking dogs and best dog backpacks are size, weight and stamina and will it be hot or cold where you’ll be hiking. Naturally you will not want to go hiking on a hot day with a long haired dog but if you do make lots of rest stops and have plenty of water for them and hopefully some shade.

When hiking and backpacking with your pet in the wilderness it is something your pet will love as animals naturally enjoy the out doors. Too be alone with their master in the wilderness is a perfect place to bond and learn some needed commands.

Backpack and What To Pack

The first thing to check, Is my dog allowed where we will be hiking and if so does he need to be on a leash or can he run free, a quick check online or a phone call to the park you are going to can save a lot of headaches later. Make sure you pack a first aid kit with some medications your pet may need in case he or she steps on a burr or just gets sore paws from walking.

Now if your dog should break a leg from a fall or chasing a squirrel (which we all hope never happens) can you pack him out or is he to heavy? This is something to consider especially if you hike in mountainous terrain where he could fall into a ravine Etc.

When choosing a dog backpack go for the one’s that have a harness that straps on your pet and the backpack can then be secured to it by Velcro. With this system on your rest stops you can easily lift the pack off so they can cool down and rest easier. Now is the time for water and maybe a little snack.

When packing for your hike he could carry some salve for his paws should they get sore, some water and a portable dog bowl as they will need lots if there are no streams close by and of course some snacks. They can also help to pack some of your stuff but remember not more than 10% of their body weight (including backpack).

If you are allowed to have your dog run free then he will have to learn to obey some commands such as:

    • Come when called
    • Stop
    • Stay
    • Heal
    • drop it

These are a few of the must know commands if they are to run free or you could lose your dog in the forest if they smell or sight an animal while hiking.

I hope this give you a few tips on hiking with your pet. Start out with short hikes to test your supplies and your dogs stamina, he needs to be brought up to speed just as you do. Good luck on all your hiking adventures and remember above all have fun and bond with the best friend you will ever have.
